How to play Ultimate Frisbee

The Basics

Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport played on a rectangular field with end zones at each end.

The Discraft UltraStar is the official disc of UK Ultimate, and the Discraft J-Star disc for juniors.

Ultimate is played in three divisions: Open, Women’s and Mixed.

There are no referees. The players uphold and administer the rules.

Key Rules:

  • Score a point by catching the disc in the opponent's endzone

  • Move the disc in any direction by passing to a teammate

  • No running with the disc; pass within 10 seconds

  • Possession shifts if the disc is intercepted, blocked, dropped, or thrown out of bounds

  • Teams switch ends after each point, raise a hand in the air to signal you are ready for the ‘pull’

  • No physical contact; fouls are called by players when contact is initiated

  • Spirit of the Game: Ultimate is self-refereed. Embrace competition with respect, adherence to rules, and the joy of play

The full set of rules can be found with the sports international governing body: The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF).
